Last week, a group of determined individuals gathered to celebrate a powerful achievement—the successful completion of the Bank On Hampton Roads financial empowerment program. Over the past five months, these graduates have invested in their futures by learning the tools and strategies needed to take control of their finances and build lasting stability. Their graduation marks not just the end of a course, but the beginning of a new chapter.

What Is Bank On Hampton Roads?
Bank On Hampton Roads is a free, five-month financial education program that has been helping individuals in our community since 2012. Designed for residents across Norfolk, Virginia Beach, Chesapeake, and surrounding areas, the program provides a unique blend of monthly financial education classes and one-on-one financial coaching.
Participants learn how to:
Manage their money and track spending
Improve credit scores
Reduce debt
Build savings
Protect against identity theft
Set and achieve long-term financial goals
This isn’t just theory—participants apply what they learn directly to their lives, often making immediate and impactful changes. One of the program’s most celebrated features is its Matched Savings incentive, where those who save $150 receive a matching $150. It’s a simple but powerful motivator that reinforces smart saving habits.
A Graduation Worth Celebrating
Graduation from the Bank On program is a milestone—one that represents not just completed coursework, but resilience, discipline, and hope. Many participants join the program overwhelmed by financial stress, unsure where to start. By graduation, they leave with knowledge, confidence, and a personalized action plan for continued success.
The stories shared at the ceremony spoke volumes. One graduate shared how she finally felt in control of her money for the first time in years. Another described the pride of opening her first savings account. These personal victories—though sometimes quiet—are deeply meaningful.
Looking Forward
The need for financial education has never been greater, and Bank On Hampton Roads is committed to continuing this important work. The program is offered both in-person and virtually, making it accessible to individuals with varying schedules and needs. New sessions begin in February, and registration is already open.
If you or someone you know could benefit from greater financial stability, we encourage you to learn more and sign up. And if you’re looking to give back, Bank On welcomes volunteers who want to serve as financial coaches or program facilitators.
